Animals hurt by P deficiency
The drastic cut-back in phosphorous fertilisers is being felt at animal level. Apart from the negative effects of P-deficiency in growing grass and other crops, the P-deficiency is transferred to animals through their feed. Animals need an adequate supply of P, and if the feed is deficient in P, it will affect their health and productivity.
It may be difficult to distinguish P-deficiency from other problems, but symptoms can include stock eating stones or other objects, poor production, poor conception, lameness, and an unhealthy looking coat.
