The farm scrap pile has always been a source of “free” steel, bolts, brackets, axles and wheels, and so much else besides — yet only the most obsessive farmer counts the value of bits and bobs salvaged from the heap, or even puts the value of the scrap pile into the farm accounts.

With recycling now flavour of the moment worldwide, and reflected in regulations which passed down to farmers and others through local and national governments from the European Union, there’s a dual incentive to reduce the quantity of recyclable material dumped as land-fill.
