Reports from around the country show that a lot of herds are averaging only around four gallons per day.

This suggests that grass quality is poor, or cows are being forced to graze too tightly, because most herds have the potential to yield 40 to 50% higher if they have plenty good grass, even with little or no supplementation, in good weather conditions.

Some of the very low-yielding herds are on a controlled starvation diet, which is generally very costly in terms of milk yield, fertility and general health.
