Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has defended moves to implement the final elements of sheep tagging arrangements for electronic identification.

Coveney defends electronic sheep tagging method

He said there does not appear to be an additional problem in general with lost tags — nor with sore and infected ears after tagging, as long as appropriate practices are observed, such as correct placement of the tag in the ear, tagging at the correct time of year in order to avoid fly strike, and disinfection of equipment and the sheep’s ear prior to tagging.

These guidelines are outlined in a booklet that the Department of Agriculture is forwarding to each flock owner.
