Irish Water to decide on integration of existing meters

It will be a matter for Irish Water to determine how it will integrate any existing metered properties into its national system — including thousands already installed at private dwellings, farm buildings and businesses, Environment Minister Phil Hogan said in reply to a Dáil question.

The Government has decided that Irish Water, a new state-owned company, to be established as an independent subsidiary within the Bord Gáis Éireann Group, will be responsible for the metering programme. The meters will be the property of Irish Water.

According to the minister households will not be levied an up-front charge for the meter, but it is likely bills will include a charge to cover its cost.
