It is illegal for farmers to get waste tyres directly from garages or replacement tyre fitters, warns Fiacra Quinn, director of the Tyre Recovery Activity Compliance Scheme.

Waste tyres for covering silage pits must be sourced from permitted waste collectors. Since 2008, waste regulations made sourcing tyres directly from garages an illegal, unaccounted and uncontrolled movement of waste.

The scheme can provide farmers with a list of authorised collectors.
