Rules will make most bulk tanks obsolete

New refrigerant gas rules will render many bulk tanks on dairy farms obsolete in the next two and a half years.

Rules will make most bulk tanks obsolete

The main gas used in bulk tanks since 1990 will be completely phased out on December 31, 2014. This R22 gas has been banned in new equipment since 2002, and its manufacture ceased in 2010.

Since then, recycled R22 gas has been used for tank repairs. This gas has become more expensive, and is likely to rise further before its use will be completely phased out at the end of 2014. Farmers shopping for second hand tanks should be aware that most of those older than eight years use R22 gas.
