Does it make sense to give up work?

QUESTION: Myself and my husband are working full time. My husband is a dairy farmer with 55 cows and some cattle, and I have a full-time job.

Does it make sense to give up work?

The farm profits are about €35,000 per annum, and I earn €28,000. We have two children, aged three and five. Currently, we pay childcare of €300 per week. We feel like all of our disposable money is gone on childcare, and would like to know how much of a difference there would be to our cash-flow if I were to give up my job to look after the children on a full-time basis.

ANSWER: This is a common question that many farm families face, and although it’s easy to calculate the mathematical differences, the answer is often not so simple.
