Pressure for a price rise for this week’s kill is being met with strong resistance from the processors as the supply of cattle to factories tightens.

Although on the face of it, some processors have increased their quoted prices by up to 5 cent/kg (2p/lb), this has been matched by a further tightening in the top-up on the quoted price which they are willing to pay to get cattle.

The reality of the trade for this week is that more of the cattle are being purchased at or very close to quoted prices, and there is growing evidence that processors are set for a determined resistance to any upward spiral in prices over the coming weeks.
