Decline in soil fertility

A recent review of tillage soil samples tested by Teagasc indicates a decline in fertility levels.

Lower fertility soils (index 1 and 2) have increased from 46 to 57%, and soils at the agronomic optimum soil index (index 3) have decreased from 26 to 21% over the last four years. Farmers are advised to aim to maintain soil fertility at the agronomic optimum, to maximise profit, and to build fertility levels on the low fertility soils.
