THE small hours will be busy for the next two months in farmyards in counties Cork, Galway and Mayo.

They have about 30% of the country’s breeding herds — with respectively 8,633, 8,492, and 7,448 of these herds in each county.

Calving activity will peak in March, the month of arrival for 428,806 of Ireland’s 1,992,339 calves in 2010. More than a million arrive in February, March, and April. In 2010, 1,344,428 calves were sired by beef bulls; 5647,911 by dairy bulls. Dairy cows produced 1,008,528 calves; beef cows 983,811. Unfortunately, statistics showed that 27,710 calves were stillborn — 11,068 of them sired by a dairy bull, 16,642 by a beef bull.
