Processors surprised by lower factory cattle intake

A DROP in the intake of cattle to beef factories last week has stabilised the market.

Processors surprised by lower factory cattle intake

Overall, the prices quoted for this week were unchanged, but processors are under increased pressure to get cattle at the quoted prices, and are having to revise their offers to secure sufficient numbers.

The base price range for steers quoted for this week was 385 to 395 cent/kg (137 to 141p/lb). Few, if any, are buying at the lower level but it is also hard enough to move cattle at the top end, unless the particular processor is under extreme pressure to get cattle. Suffice to say that 390 cent/kg (139p/lb) is the more general run, and some farmers are getting a shade more for good quality cattle.
