More than 800 calves imported per month

AGRICULTURE Minister Simon Coveney has confirmed that about 2,500 calves were imported into Ireland in July, August and September.

He said his department is fully aware of the need for continual vigilance in maintaining the highest level of disease-free status in Ireland, and said importers also have a critical role in ensuring no diseases are introduced to Ireland that might jeopardise its standing as the Food Island.

Mr Coveney was answering a Dáil question from Louth TD Séamus Kirk of Fianna Fáil, who said some calves have come from Romania.
