Prime cattle supplies to tighten

A DRAMATIC decline in cattle aged between 12 and 30 months has emerged in the Department of Agriculture’s most recent Animal Identification and Movements (AIM) figures.

Prime cattle supplies to tighten

This suggests that prime cattle supplies will continue to tighten over the coming months, according to Bord Bia sources.

The figures show increased numbers of calves and weanlings, due to higher calf births and lower exports this year. But cattle aged 12 to 30 months are 182,000 head behind the level of 12 months ago. The decline is most apparent in male cattle, particularly in beef breed animals — attributed to the strong live exports of 2010, and greater numbers of males being finished earlier as young bulls.
