TEAGASC advisers said last week winter wheat and early sown spring barley were approaching the correct stage for whole-cropping. Most crops still had some way to go before crimping or alkalage.

Harvesting cereal whole crop usually starts three to four weeks before the crop is harvested for grain, and after the grain reaches the “soft cheese” stage.

Harvesting can continue until the grain reaches the “hard cheddar” stage.
