THE disease known as summer mastitis bears no relationship to normal mastitis problems or to SCC levels in dairy herds.

The problem is more widespread in autumn-calving herds.

From now until September, is the peak period for summer mastitis. Dry dairy cows and in-calf heifers are most at risk. The bacteria causing the disease are carried and spread by flies.
