THE Department of Agriculture advises that burning vegetation requires expert skill and should only be attempted by experienced persons and in accordance with a meticulously prepared fire plan.

They advise farmers to ask themselves if the fire is absolutely necessary, can they stop it, are they within the legally permitted period, within a mile of a woodland, and are nearby properties safe.

They advise notifying neighbours and the owners of neighbouring plantations, the gardaí and the fire service, having sufficient help and equipment, and adequate means of communications should an emergency arise.
