Buffalo edge out Friesians in battle of the water trough
They are, however, more robust, and a considerable investment had to be made in reinforcing all the metal structures of containment in John Lynch’s sheds and milking parlour. Apart from that, the equipment works just as well on buffalo as it does on Friesian cows.
Their temperament, according to Lynch, is playful, and there’s “no comparison” between them and dairy cows. It’s in their nature to wallow in water and they are happy to wade into river pools up to their noses during warm weather, while their Friesian friends look on from their comfort zone of green grass. But they can also be stubborn and will lie down and refuse to move once they’ve decided they don’t want to go somewhere.
