Austrians losing the grass plot

AUSTRIA is the EU’s biggest producer of pasture milk, trumpeted the country’s Heumilch dairy co-op last week.

Austrians losing the grass plot

The group’s name literally means “hay milk” in English, and the marketing message with their dairy products is that the cows are fed grasses and herbs straight from the pasture in summer, and sun-dried hay and mineral-rich coarse grain in winter.

Combine this with favourable images of this attractive central European country, such as the hay meadows of autumn, or the country’s fine foods and drinks well known to skiing tourists, and consumers are easily won over.
