Identify problems during milking
It encourages and rewards farmers for producing the type of milk which is most valuable to the co-op. This is especially important entering an era when there must be a move away from commodity products to high priced products which requires very high quality milk. Since the start of the programme, the percentage of farmers achieving a bonus has increased significantly to over 85%.
Very often the best way to investigate problems is to be present during milking, and this was a regular part of the work of the advisers. Investigations during milking often reveal the reasons for problems, particularly regarding milking and hygiene practices. If cows are restless in the parlour, it may indicate electrical problems, cows being packed too tightly, a milking machine fault, or poor milking practices. Teat end damage is a major tell tale sign that something is wrong.
