AT LEAST one of the Irish contributions to the European Commission’s public consultation on the Common Agriculture Policy will be viewed with great interest in Brussels.

In his submission, Paul Laird of Trinity College in Dublin said citizens expect farmers getting CAP subsidies to operate to high environmental and agricultural standards, and these standards to be enforced. “As a citizen and taxpayer, I am disappointed that this is often not the case,” said Mr Laird.

He went on to cite the example of cattle being kept in a feedlot on the Co Wexford coast for several years, causing damage to a Special Area of Conservation.
