SEED sales suggest a large increase in spring oilseed rape sowings this year, albeit from a low base, according to Teagasc advisers.

The area of fodder crops is expected to rise also. Central Statistics Office official figures show an area of 2,600 hectares of kale and rape, however, seed sales suggest a higher area, according to advisers.

Meanwhile, growth in winter cereals had improved up to last weekend, but crops were still behind normal. Growth of spring crops remained slow, with many reports of poor tillering, soil capping and trace element deficiencies (especially magnesium).
