Spring rape could be profitable option this year

PROFITABILITY for spring rape could be attractive this year, depending on availability of contracts for fuel and food uses, according to Teagasc advisers.

But sowing should be delayed until soil and weather conditions are conducive to rapid growth and less costly weed control, according to last week’s crop advice bulletin.

In contrast, many growers were still undecided last week on planting spring cereals, because of extremely tight profit prospects even for high yielding crops.
