Gormley’s hedge protection plea

SINCE gorse fires raged during recent fine weather, Environment Minister, John Gormley, has asked the assistance of the public in reporting unlawful cutting, grubbing, burning, or destruction of hedges to the gardaí or the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

He also reminded local authorities, public bodies, contractors and private land owners that destruction of vegetation on uncultivated land, or in hedges or ditches, is restricted by law during the nesting and breeding season for birds and wildlife, from March 1 to August 31. The minister said, “regrettably a number of situations arose last year which required my department to seek appropriate prosecution in certain instances.” He said it is his policy to prosecute those found in breach of this legislation, including public bodies.
