A SPOKESPERSON for the US Dairy Export Council warned the EU’s export refund and intervention moves will have a major negative effect on world dairy trading, prolonging the down cycle and delaying natural market recovery.

He said US suppliers will be hard pressed to compete when the EU, the biggest dairy exporter in the world, can sell product for hundreds of dollars less than rival suppliers. The EU had promised in world trade talks to phase out export refunds, if other big trading blocs did the same. But the US still uses export credit, so the EU is entitled to continue subsidies, within limits set by the World Trade Organisation.
