Dutch and French notified EU rapid alert system over pigmeat scare

The rapid alert system included a Dutch notification dated December 6 alerting users to the presence of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorobifenyls in pigmeat from Ireland, discovered in a Dutch company’s checking procedures. Product was to be detained, as a result. Dutch authorities also contacted the Food Safety Authority of Ireland about the discovery of PCBs in pork fat samples in Holland. The department had not previously been made aware of the Dutch investigation.

On December 8, France posted an alert of dioxins in pork fillets from the Netherlands, with raw material from Ireland. It also resulted from a company’s own check. The product had passed its use-by date.
