Quota removal could lead to dairy growth recovery

THE dairy industry can add between €750 million and €1.5 billion to the economy by 2020, according to Teagasc director, Professor Gerry Boyle.

Quota removal could lead to dairy growth recovery

He told last week’s Teagasc national dairy conference that Ireland’s full potential as one of the world’s most efficient producers and exporters of dairy products could not be realised while the EU milk quota existed, but the loss of growth could be recovered in a relatively short period following the removal of the quota in 2015.

He told farmers that with “best management practices”, expanding milk production will be profitable as long as the average milk price doesn’t fall below 24c per litre.
