Ireland escapes spread of bluetongue disease

IRELAND is now one of the few EU countries to have escaped the bluetongue livestock disease scourge.

Livestock restrictions due to the disease have spread across member states, as new strains have been infecting sheep and cattle.

The burden of extra costs due to bluetongue helped to send protesting French farmers onto the streets last week.
