UNEXPECTED pressure on beef prices at the factories has taken farmers by surprise, with finishers having to battle harder to retain the prices of recent weeks.

Prices similar to last week continue to be paid by most processors, but any prospect of an increase in this week’s market climate has been ruled out by the processors.

Some — particularly those who had been paying at the higher end of the price league — have reduced prices quoted to farmers by as much as 6 cents/kg (2p/lb) across the grades, and others are warning of the same outlook, claiming weaker markets for beef as the reason for the reversal in the recent price trend.
