Britain importing EU milk as slump hits

UP TO 40 lorry loads, or one million litres of milk per day, are going from Northern Ireland to mainland Britain, because a dairy farming slump has left processors short of raw material.

Companies are also sourcing milk in mainland Europe. Milk from Belgium and France can be bought for €0.32 per litre, and transported for 5.5 cent per litre.

Milk from Northern Ireland is costing processors at least this much, and probably up to 40.5 cent per litre, including transport.
