NEW minimum standards for marketing of fruit and vegetables in the EU will help to reduce food waste next year.

Fruit and veg size restrictions to be revised

Next July, EU regulations which banned misshapen and small fruit and vegetables from sale are likely to be scrapped. Because of rising food prices, the European Commission has asked member states to repeal marketing standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetables.

A preliminary vote on the issue last month indicated the regulations will be scrapped, but next summer is the earliest date for completion of the legislative process.
