Competition report highlights worries about high vet costs

Veterinary costs in Ireland are among the highest in Europe and regulation among the most restrictive, the combination of which is adding substantially to production costs on farms, where margins are tightening.

The majority of farmers, and in particular young farmers entering the industry, are the most qualified ever. Yet, the availability of treatments for animal care are at their most restrictive and most expensive. The Competition Authority has recommended more transparency, more freedom for vets to advertise, introduction of lay operators for TB testing, and provision of services in remote areas.
