VACCINATION against bluetongue will be introduced in Ireland only in the event of a confirmed outbreak of the disease.

We will not vaccinate on a prophylactic basis, Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith told the Dail.

Vaccination programmes have commenced in a number of the member states affected by the particular strain of the disease which has spread across the EU.
