The compensation scheme

THE Department of the Environment has operated a compensation scheme for persons who agreed to stop turf cutting in designated raised bogs. It also purchases designated bogs.

Domestic turf cutting is not prohibited in blanket bog, although the use of ‘sausage cutting’ machines is. Large-scale peat extraction works may require planning permission, with an associated environmental impact assessment, under the planning code.
