The life of the average farmer is akin to that of a punter at the racetrack: they hope for the best, full of confidence and optimism, in a business that is less predictable than the weather, full of surprises.

The latest came last Thursday, when the Farm Improvement Scheme grant cash ran out, leaving the best laid plans and ambitions of many farmers high and dry.
