Younger heifers are best beef sellers

THE lift in beef prices at factories over the past week has been fully maintained.

Younger heifers are best beef sellers

Officially quoted prices of 280 to 266 cents/kg (100p-95p/lb) for R and O grades are uniform across most of the country for steers. A further 6 to 12 cents/kg (2 to 4p/lb) is offered for heifers, with the higher prices going for the younger heifers, thanks to strong demand and scarce supply.

Some processors have tried to penalise farmers selling over 30 months steers, but there has been very little give by farmers, who are confident that they can move a few miles to another plant and avoid the penalty.
