Butchers’ lambs up to €94

BUTCHERS and wholesalers supplying the domestic trade were the lamb price trend setters this week.

Butchers’ lambs up to €94

Quoted prices at the factories showed very little change from last week, with base prices from 354 to 355 cents/kg (126p/lb) Monday and Tuesday. But some farmers said they did deals for up to 20 cents/kg more than the quoted rates, in areas where the lamb supply was tight.

In the marts, the trade was driven Monday by butchers and wholesalers. The trade at Fermoy, with 700 head on offer, was described as excellent. The butchers paid €80 to €94 per head for lambs, which was equivalent to €28 to €40 over. The factory lots sold for €60 to 75/head, or €20 to 30 over. There were 1,200 head on offer at Kilkenny, where butchers lambs were improved by up to €6/head, selling for €31 to 42 over. Factory lambs made €27 to 33 over.
