End of EU’s milk quotas spells trouble for Irish producers
After years of struggling against quota limitations, and paying high prices to secure additional quota, it is ironic that the disappearance of quotas looms after milk prices have reached record high levels, and many dairy men are expecting one of their best years ever.
The EU quota restriction played a role in the milk price jump and unless there is some system to control EU production in line with market demand, and import controls, a milk production free-for-all could be self-destructing, particularly for farmers without scope to increase production, because of land limitations.
