Buoyant year for grain maize as prices rise
The vast majority of maize here is grown for ensiling the entire crop as a forage for cattle, but grain maize is combine harvested, and the stalks are chopped and left behind in the field, while grain can be sold to millers or used for feeding on the farm, perhaps after crimping.
Grain maize varieties are normally sown under plastic with about 25% less seeds than for a forage crop. As well as its high cash value, it is a suitable break crop in wheat production.
