Demand for heifers under 24 months

FOR anyone with good quality heifers under 24 months fit to sell, there is some spark of hope left in this week’s trade, but the news on the steer trade is not encouraging for any finishers.

Demand for heifers under 24 months

There is good demand for these young heifers with processors willing to pay up to 294 cents/kg (105p/lb) for Rs, which is substantially ahead of similar category steers this week, as further downward pressure on prices bites into cattle farmers’ margins. In the trade for the heifers under 24 months, the emphasis is very much on the R grade, with prices for O graders not a lot better than those on offer for the steers of similar grade.

Bad weather is not helping the trade for the steers at the factories, with farmers anxious to move off any cattle that are fit, some under-finished cattle going into the factories, and conditions on heavy soil farms becoming water logged due to the unceasing rain.
