Danger of quad bike accidents must not go unrecognised
Yet there are practically no controls over use of these highly powered vehicles, capable of very high speeds over rough terrain. There can be horrendous injuries in the event of a mishap. Young people are particularly attracted to the quad. Its small size may lead to an impression it is easy to handle, and underestimation of its potential for injury, with very little protection for the rider.
They may also be swayed by the quad’s glamorised image as a sport vehicle for the adventurous, reflected in high speed quad championships. Very young people, some in their early teens, take part in this exciting and challenging sport, undoubtedly some of them farmers’ sons who developed skills on the farm quad.
