UNEXPECTED tax bills are hitting farmers who fall foul of hidden anomalies in the taxation of property deals, warned John Dawson, President of the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute, at the Ploughing Championships.

“When a farmer says that he really wants to rent the farm to his own son, but he won’t because he can’t afford the tax bill, then you genuinely begin to feel for these people”.

He highlighted the more common examples that he has come across, but, added, “There are many more”.
