Haste in embracing Early Retirement Scheme regretted

THE Early Retirement Scheme, which entitled a farmer to retire at 56 years and claim a pension to which he had not contributed a penny, seemed almost too good to be true.

Time has proven that, in many ways, it was too good to be true.

It is the dream scheme that has turned sour for many Irish farmers, leaving many regrets in its wake for participants.
