More farmers cashing in and leaving land behind

THE high number of “good” farms coming up for sale is causing heads to turn.

More farmers cashing in and leaving land behind

Well-developed farms of 200 to 300 acres, occupied and run by progressive, active farmers, were seen as a corner stone of the industry, operating at sufficient scale to achieve lower production costs while providing a decent standard of living.

Landowners are asking themselves why some of the best farmers in the country have decided to quit, after giving so much of their time and energy to set up their farming businesses. The answer must be that they realise that investing the cashed-in value of their farm will return several times what they can earn from actively farming the land, in the current economic boom.
