NEARLY a foot and a half of rain in the coldest spring since 1996 summed up the weather challenge to farmers this year.

The 440mm of rain recorded at Met Eireann’s Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry was typical of the very wet spring (March, April and May) in parts of the midlands, west and southwest.

It was the wettest spring in more than 50 years of weather records at Mullingar and Clones.
