Don’t wait for heavy silage crops

SILAGE harvesting is well under way. If the weather is suitable, don’t delay cutting in order to get a very heavy crop, because what you gain in yield, you will lose in quality. (DMD will be dropping by three units per week, and double this if the crop is lodged).

This drop in DMD will seriously reduce animal performance and increase requirement for concentrates. Delayed cutting also damages the swards and delays after-grass.
