SHEEPMEAT processors Monday offered 445 to 442 cents/kg (159p or 158p/lb) for new season lamb, a slight improvement on the previous week.

But there was better news for sheep farmers Tuesday when prices lifted as much as 15 cents/kg, with a top price of 460 cents/kg (164p/lb) on offer at Dawn, Ballyhaunis — no extra bonus for quality — while the general run was 448 cents/kg (160p/lb), with a bonus of 6 cents/kg (2p/lb) for U grade lambs.

In the marts, prices were up to €10 per head better Monday. There was a very good trade at Fermoy, where spring lambs were €8 dearer, at €38 to 52 over €1/kg. Butchers hoggets ranged €20 to €35 over. There was 900 head at Kilkenny where prices were €10 per head stronger. Spring lambs made €40 to 51 over, hoggets €20 to 41 over.
