‘We’ve been sold out... it’s an extremely bad deal’

THE outcome of Sunday’s Munster hurling final took second place in the thoughts of Michael Keane as he worked on his dairy farm in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford, yesterday.

‘We’ve been sold out... it’s an extremely bad deal’

For the CAP reform deal, coming after 18 months of falling milk prices, is set to reduce dairy farm incomes even further. And that poses problems for farmers like Michael, who milks 103 cows, supplies Glanbia and has a quota of almost 120,000 gallons.

“We have been sold out on the dairy side, the sector in farming that is probably working the hardest, with people getting up early every morning and working 365 days a year. We will be down nine pence a gallon even after whatever compensation they give us. I think it is an extremely bad deal for rural Ireland,” he said.
