Changes considered to sugar compo

Brussels: Significant changes to the restructuring package for the sugar industry, in particular the type and form of compensation that will be available to farmers and processors, is being considered by EU Farm Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel, according to Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness.

Ms McGuinness said: “The commissioner is considering compensating farmers for their loss of beet delivery rights. Such a proposal would include specifying how much compensation would be targeted at the processing sector and how much would be targeted at farmers. Another option would be to create two separate restructuring aids, one for the industry and another for farmers.”
