Hats off again to the organisers of the Ploughing

ORGANISING the largest outdoor agricultural event in Europe is a daunting challenge.

Successfully achieving it here in Ireland through voluntary effort is all the more impressive.

But the dedication and commitment of the farmers who organise the National Ploughing Championships, which attracted 179,000 people to Mogeely in Co Cork last week, is truly remarkable.

They have been well served for many years by Managing Director Anna May McHugh, who never fails to amaze us with her levels of energy, endurance for long hours of hard work, and ability to cope with every eventuality, ably and courteously.

As this major event moves from location to location around the country, there is huge local involvement in the team of several hundred who ensure its smooth running.

For many, the commitment can be for weeks or months.

The speed of transformation of a green field into a city of marquees, tents, caravans, trade displays, ploughing sites, vehicle parking, sanitation, and catering for a three-day event is truly remarkable.

Hats off to all who contributed to the 2005 Championships, which set an all-time record for attendance, proving beyond doubt the popularity of the event, regardless of the threat of bad weather or the hassle of traffic jams.

Tuesday traffic jams were largely resolved Wednesday and Thursday; the lessons was quickly learned.

Next year, the National Ploughing Association will celebrate their 75th Anniversary with the World and National Ploughing Championships four-day event in Co Carlow. God speed their approach to yet another daunting challenge.
